Payload.bin – Details
Google introduced a new format of OTA/firmware update files after the launch of the Android Oreo operating system. Moreover, this was introduced after Google brought in the A/B system update. Besides, previously these OTA/firmware update files came with partition images that would allow for simple and easy extraction of the contents by just unzipping it. But, since the arrival of the new format, this procedure has become tedious and requires a step by step method to extract. Because now, due to the presence of Payload.bin that carries all the important files of the OTA/firmware update.

Steps to extract Payload.bin file from OTA or Firmware

- Download the Payload Dumper tool as well as the Python for your compatible (32bit or 64bit) Windows computer from the download section above.
- Run the Python installer on your PC and follow all the instructions during the installation process prompted by the installer.
- Once you have successfully installed Python on your PC, you need to install a virtual environment on your PC. Follow the below steps to install it:
- Open a command prompt.
- Run the below commands where the first one will change the directory in the CMD, and the second command will set the path of the Python scrips to System PATH variable;
cd C:Usersyour_windows_username_hereAppDataLocalProgramsPythonPython37Scriptssetx path C:Usersyour_windows_username_hereAppDataLocalProgramsPythonPython37Scripts
(make sure to change the “your_windows_username_here” with the appropriate user name of your PC on both the above commands)
- Once you have run the above-mentioned commands then, run the below command:
pip install virtualenv
It will download and install a package and after that, a success message will be displayed. - Now, you need to extract the contents of the Payload Dumper Tool on your PC after which you will get two folders i.e. payload_input and payload_output.
- Then you need to extract the OTA/firmware zip file on your PC to get the payload.bin file.
- Copy the payload.bin file to the payload_input folder.
- Open the payload_dumper.exe file.
- Then all you need to do is let the script do its work. Once it is done, you will get the extracted contents of the payload.bin file into the payload_output folder.
